Mulethi is fifty times sweeter than sugar and one of the most-used herbs on earth. In Ayurveda it is yashtimadhu, the herb for the throat and the voice — singers and teachers across India still chew a stick of it before a long day of talking. Its demulcent, film-forming sweetness is what makes it soothing, and the same property makes it a favourite in gut and skin preparations.

Ours is milled from graded, peeled root, giving a pale straw-coloured powder that dissolves cleanly in hot water. It sweetens any bitter formula it is added to, which is exactly how the classical texts use it — as the anupana, the carrier that makes a difficult mixture drinkable.

Equally at home in a face pack: liquorice is a traditional brightening ingredient for uneven tone.

Better than expected

This is clearly recently ground rather than sitting in a warehouse for a year. I take half a teaspoon in warm milk each evening and have done for two months. Five stars from me.

    Real quality, not supermarket grade

I have bought this herb from four different suppliers now and this is the best of them. My partner has started taking it too, so we are getting through it quickly. Exactly as described on the listing.

    Reliable every time

Opened the pouch and the aroma filled the kitchen. I have started using it in a face pack as well as internally. A genuinely good product at a fair price.

Recommended by a friend — glad I tried it

I have bought this herb from four different suppliers now and this is the best of them. The 250g pouch works out much better value than buying 50g repeatedly. Will definitely buy again.

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. I take half a teaspoon in warm milk each evening and have done for two months. Pleased I found this shop.

Questions & answers4

4 of 4 answered

  • Does it dissolve properly, or does it settle at the bottom?

    Rachel M. · 3 weeks ago

    • It's a milled whole herb rather than an extract, so some settling is normal. Stir it into something warm and drink it fairly promptly — warm milk or a smoothie works better than cold water.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 3 weeks ago

    • I whisk mine into warm milk and it stays put long enough to finish the cup.

      James H.· 2 weeks ago

  • How strong is the taste?

    James H. · 2 months ago

    • Honestly, quite earthy — that's true of the herb rather than of our version of it. Most people take it with honey, in milk, or blended into something with a stronger flavour of its own.

  • Is this suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

    Nikhil S. · 2 months ago

    • Yes — it's a single plant ingredient with nothing of animal origin used in the product or the processing. The full ingredient list is on the Ingredients tab above.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 2 months ago

  • Where is it sourced from, and is it tested?

    Anita R. · 3 months ago

    • Sourcing is listed under Origin at the top of this page. Every batch is checked on arrival for identity and purity before it's packed, and we keep the batch records for each lot we sell.
