If ashwagandha is the herb for holding up under pressure, shatavari is the herb for restoring what pressure takes out of you. The name translates as "she who possesses a hundred roots", and in classical Ayurveda it is the first-named tonic for women at every stage — cycle, conception, postnatal recovery and the transition through menopause.

The tubers are dug, peeled, sliced and shade-dried before milling, which keeps the powder creamy-white and faintly sweet instead of the grey, bitter grade you get from machine-dried root. Shatavari is madhura (sweet) and sheeta (cooling) in effect, which is why it is traditionally paired with warm milk and a pinch of cardamom rather than taken dry.

Mucilage-rich and gentle enough for daily use, it is equally valued as a demulcent for the digestive tract.

The colour and smell told me straight away this was fresh. My partner has started taking it too, so we are getting through it quickly. No hesitation in recommending it.

This is clearly recently ground rather than sitting in a warehouse for a year. I take half a teaspoon in warm milk each evening and have done for two months. A genuinely good product at a fair price.

A staple in our house now

Opened the pouch and the aroma filled the kitchen. I take half a teaspoon in warm milk each evening and have done for two months. Will definitely buy again.

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. I have started using it in a face pack as well as internally. Delivery was quick and it was well packaged.

    Genuinely fresh

Opened the pouch and the aroma filled the kitchen. It dissolves without lumps, which the last one I tried absolutely did not. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

Questions & answers3

3 of 3 answered

  • Does it dissolve properly, or does it settle at the bottom?

    Meera P. · 3 weeks ago

    • It's a milled whole herb rather than an extract, so some settling is normal. Stir it into something warm and drink it fairly promptly — warm milk or a smoothie works better than cold water.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 3 weeks ago

    • I whisk mine into warm milk and it stays put long enough to finish the cup.

  • How strong is the taste?

    Sofia L. · last month

    • Honestly, quite earthy — that's true of the herb rather than of our version of it. Most people take it with honey, in milk, or blended into something with a stronger flavour of its own.

  • Can I take this alongside my prescription medication?

    Hassan A. · 2 months ago

    • That isn't something we can answer safely for an individual — herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, and show them the ingredient list from this page.
