Kaunch, or velvet bean, is unusual among Ayurvedic herbs: it is both a nervine and a vajikarana tonic, which is why it appears in classical formulas for the nervous system and for reproductive strength alike. The seeds are a natural source of L-DOPA, the direct precursor the body uses to make dopamine — the reason modern research keeps returning to this bean.

The pods are covered in irritant hairs, so preparation matters: ours are threshed, de-haired, dried and only then milled, giving a smooth, coffee-coloured powder with none of the itch the raw pod is notorious for.

Traditionally taken with milk and a little ghee at night, on courses of a few weeks at a time. Bitter on its own — most people prefer it sweetened.

Fresh, fine and properly aromatic

Opened the pouch and the aroma filled the kitchen. The 250g pouch works out much better value than buying 50g repeatedly. Delivery was quick and it was well packaged.

I have bought this herb from four different suppliers now and this is the best of them. My partner has started taking it too, so we are getting through it quickly. A genuinely good product at a fair price.

    Lovely quality

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. I have started using it in a face pack as well as internally. Fine product, though it is not really what I had assumed I was buying — my mistake rather than theirs.

Grinds finer than the last brand I tried

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. The 250g pouch works out much better value than buying 50g repeatedly. Docking a star only because I would like clearer batch dates on the pack.

Recommended by a friend — glad I tried it

I have bought this herb from four different suppliers now and this is the best of them. I take half a teaspoon in warm milk each evening and have done for two months. Perfectly decent, but I have had better value elsewhere for this particular herb.

Questions & answers3

3 of 3 answered

  • Does it dissolve properly, or does it settle at the bottom?

    James H. · 3 weeks ago

    • It's a milled whole herb rather than an extract, so some settling is normal. Stir it into something warm and drink it fairly promptly — warm milk or a smoothie works better than cold water.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 3 weeks ago

    • I whisk mine into warm milk and it stays put long enough to finish the cup.

  • How strong is the taste?

    Sofia L. · last month

    • Honestly, quite earthy — that's true of the herb rather than of our version of it. Most people take it with honey, in milk, or blended into something with a stronger flavour of its own.

  • How should I store it once it's open?

    Nikhil S. · 2 months ago

    • Somewhere cool, dark and dry, sealed between uses — a cupboard away from the hob is ideal. Storage guidance for this product specifically is on the Storage tab above.
