Kalmegh earns its English name. It is one of the most intensely bitter herbs in the entire materia medica, and in Ayurveda that bitterness is the point: tikta rasa is what clears heat, moves bile and resets a sluggish digestion. It has been the go-to herb for liver support and seasonal immunity across India and South East Asia for centuries, and remains a licensed cold-and-flu botanical in several European pharmacopoeias.

We mill the whole aerial parts — leaf and tender stem — harvested just before flowering, when andrographolide content peaks. The powder is deep green and unmistakably bitter; there is no way to make it pleasant and we do not try.

Usually taken in short courses at the change of season rather than continuously.

Opened the pouch and the aroma filled the kitchen. It dissolves without lumps, which the last one I tried absolutely did not. Docking a star only because I would like clearer batch dates on the pack.

Grinds finer than the last brand I tried

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. I take half a teaspoon in warm milk each evening and have done for two months. Fine product, though it is not really what I had assumed I was buying — my mistake rather than theirs.

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. My partner has started taking it too, so we are getting through it quickly. Marking it four rather than five only because the smell takes some getting used to.

This is clearly recently ground rather than sitting in a warehouse for a year. The 250g pouch works out much better value than buying 50g repeatedly. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

Recommended by a friend — glad I tried it

The colour and smell told me straight away this was fresh. The 250g pouch works out much better value than buying 50g repeatedly. Good quality, but stronger than I was expecting and I have had to use much less.

Questions & answers3

3 of 3 answered

  • Does it dissolve properly, or does it settle at the bottom?

    Nikhil S. · 3 weeks ago

    • It's a milled whole herb rather than an extract, so some settling is normal. Stir it into something warm and drink it fairly promptly — warm milk or a smoothie works better than cold water.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 3 weeks ago

    • I whisk mine into warm milk and it stays put long enough to finish the cup.

      Meera P.· 2 weeks ago

  • How strong is the taste?

    Meera P. · 2 months ago

    • Honestly, quite earthy — that's true of the herb rather than of our version of it. Most people take it with honey, in milk, or blended into something with a stronger flavour of its own.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 2 months ago

  • How long does one pack usually last if I'm using it every day?

    Hassan A. · 2 months ago

    • It depends on your dose, but at the amount on the pack most people find a standard size lasts between three and six weeks of daily use. If you're using it occasionally rather than daily, expect considerably longer.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 2 months ago

    • Mine lasted about a month using it most days, for what it's worth.
