Almost nobody presses bitter gourd seed, which is a shame, because the seed oil is unusual: roughly 60% conjugated linolenic acid, a fatty acid found in barely any other plant oil and the reason this oil keeps appearing in metabolic and skin research.

Karela itself is India's best-known sugar-balance vegetable, and the seed oil is used in the same spirit — a few drops massaged in, or taken in very small quantities where a practitioner advises it. Its more everyday use is external: for stubborn, itchy, psoriasis-prone patches, where its fatty-acid profile is genuinely different from the usual carriers.

Cold-pressed in small batches from Andhra seed and left unrefined. Deep amber, bitter-smelling, and rare enough that supply is seasonal.

A little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts. I take a teaspoon each morning with a little honey. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

    Very pleased

Thick, dark and unrefined, exactly as a cold press should be. I use it on my face at night and on the ends of my hair in the morning. Delivery was quick and it was well packaged.

    My skin is much happier

The smell is strong, which is how I know it has not been deodorised. It has replaced two other products in my bathroom cabinet. Very happy, and I will be reordering.

    Exactly as described

The smell is strong, which is how I know it has not been deodorised. It has replaced two other products in my bathroom cabinet. Slightly slower delivery than I expected, but the product itself is excellent.

Questions & answers4

4 of 4 answered

  • Is this cold pressed?

    Nikhil S. · 3 weeks ago

    • Yes, and unrefined — which is why the colour and smell vary a little between batches. That variation is the oil doing what it should, not a fault.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 3 weeks ago

  • Will it clog pores if I use it on my face?

    James H. · last month

    • That varies from person to person. Try it on a small area for a few days before using it all over, and give any new oil a couple of weeks before deciding.

  • Can I take this alongside my prescription medication?

    Rachel M. · 2 months ago

    • That isn't something we can answer safely for an individual — herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, and show them the ingredient list from this page.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 2 months ago

  • Is the packaging recyclable?

    Hassan A. · 3 months ago

    • The outer carton is card and goes in with your paper recycling. The inner pouch is kept airtight to protect the contents, so check your local authority's guidance for that part.
