Real sandalwood is expensive, slow-growing and heavily regulated, and the market is full of substitutes dyed to look the part. This is genuine Santalum album heartwood from legally harvested, government-regulated Karnataka stock, milled fine enough to make a smooth paste with a few drops of water.

In Ayurveda chandan is the pre-eminent cooling agent for skin: a sheeta-virya herb applied to calm heat, redness and prickly irritation. A sandalwood paste on the forehead is a traditional response to a hot head, literally and figuratively, and the same paste is used to steady the mind before meditation.

The scent is soft, milky and persistent — nothing like the sharp synthetics sold as sandalwood fragrance. A 25g tin lasts a long time; you need very little per application.

A staple in our house now

Opened the pouch and the aroma filled the kitchen. It dissolves without lumps, which the last one I tried absolutely did not. Exactly as described on the listing.

    Real quality, not supermarket grade

Very finely milled — no grittiness at all when I mix it. It dissolves without lumps, which the last one I tried absolutely did not. Will definitely buy again.

Questions & answers4

4 of 4 answered

  • Does it dissolve properly, or does it settle at the bottom?

    James H. · 3 weeks ago

    • It's a milled whole herb rather than an extract, so some settling is normal. Stir it into something warm and drink it fairly promptly — warm milk or a smoothie works better than cold water.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 3 weeks ago

    • I whisk mine into warm milk and it stays put long enough to finish the cup.

      James H.· 2 weeks ago

  • How strong is the taste?

    Meera P. · last month

    • Honestly, quite earthy — that's true of the herb rather than of our version of it. Most people take it with honey, in milk, or blended into something with a stronger flavour of its own.

  • Where is it sourced from, and is it tested?

    Nikhil S. · 2 months ago

    • Sourcing is listed under Origin at the top of this page. Every batch is checked on arrival for identity and purity before it's packed, and we keep the batch records for each lot we sell.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 2 months ago

  • Can I take this alongside my prescription medication?

    Anita R. · 3 months ago

    • That isn't something we can answer safely for an individual — herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, and show them the ingredient list from this page.
