Zoof, as it is sold in Indian and Unani stores, is bartang: the seed of broadleaf plantain (Plantago major), the low-growing "white man's foot" of footpaths and cart tracks. It is a close cousin of isabgol — hence its other name, jangli isabgol, wild psyllium — and shares its defining property: soaked in water, the tiny seeds swell into a soft, slippery mucilage.

That mucilage is what tukhm-e-bartang is valued for in Unani practice. It is a cooling demulcent, traditionally taken soaked or as a sherbet to soothe a dry, tickly throat, and to settle loose motions in the same gentle, bulking way isabgol does.

Supplied as clean, whole, dark seed. Like any mucilaginous seed it needs plenty of water — soak it first, and drink a full glass with it.

Clean and well sorted

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. Grinding a week's worth at a time works well for me. Will definitely buy again.

Whole pieces rather than broken bits, which is exactly what I wanted. The larger size is much better value and it keeps perfectly. No hesitation in recommending it.

Arrived clean, well graded and free of the dust you often get. I make a decoction twice a week and the strength is consistent every time. Pleased I found this shop.

    Good value for the quality

You can see the quality as soon as you open the bag. Storing it whole means it still smells strong three months in. Five stars from me.

Questions & answers4

4 of 4 answered

  • Do I need to grind it myself?

    Nikhil S. · 3 weeks ago

    • For most uses, yes — it's sold whole so it keeps its aroma far longer than a pre-ground powder would. A spice grinder or a pestle and mortar is plenty.

  • Is it cleaned and sorted, or will I need to pick through it?

    Meera P. · last month

    • It's sorted and cleaned before packing, so you shouldn't be picking out stalks or grit. If a pack ever arrives otherwise, tell us and we'll replace it.

  • Is this suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

    Nikhil S. · 2 months ago

    • Yes — it's a single plant ingredient with nothing of animal origin used in the product or the processing. The full ingredient list is on the Ingredients tab above.

  • Where is it sourced from, and is it tested?

    Nikhil S. · 3 months ago

    • Sourcing is listed under Origin at the top of this page. Every batch is checked on arrival for identity and purity before it's packed, and we keep the batch records for each lot we sell.
