Bakuchi is the seed the cosmetics industry rediscovered. Bakuchiol — the gentle retinol alternative now in half the serums on the shelf — is extracted from exactly this seed, though Ayurveda has used the whole thing for well over a thousand years for a completely different reason: pigmentation.

In the classical texts bakuchi is the pre-eminent herb for kushtha and switra, the skin conditions we would now describe as vitiligo and stubborn patchy pigmentation. It is used both internally in tiny amounts and externally as an oil or paste, and it is genuinely photosensitising — the traditional protocol pairs it with measured sun exposure for that exact reason.

Supplied as clean, whole, gravity-separated seed. This is a herb to use knowledgeably and sparingly, ideally under guidance.

Better than the local shop

I grind it fresh myself, so getting it whole matters to me. The larger size is much better value and it keeps perfectly. Pleased I found this shop.

    Lovely quality

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. I have been using it in a winter kadha along with tulsi and ginger. Five stars from me.

Whole pieces rather than broken bits, which is exactly what I wanted. Grinding a week's worth at a time works well for me. It would be good to have a larger size available.

Questions & answers4

4 of 4 answered

  • Do I need to grind it myself?

    Hassan A. · 3 weeks ago

    • For most uses, yes — it's sold whole so it keeps its aroma far longer than a pre-ground powder would. A spice grinder or a pestle and mortar is plenty.

  • Is it cleaned and sorted, or will I need to pick through it?

    Dev K. · 2 months ago

    • It's sorted and cleaned before packing, so you shouldn't be picking out stalks or grit. If a pack ever arrives otherwise, tell us and we'll replace it.

  • How should I store it once it's open?

    Ellie B. · 2 months ago

    • Somewhere cool, dark and dry, sealed between uses — a cupboard away from the hob is ideal. Storage guidance for this product specifically is on the Storage tab above.

  • Do you ship outside the UK?

    Anita R. · 3 months ago

    • We do, to most of Europe. Delivery cost and time are shown at checkout once you've entered an address. Some countries restrict certain botanicals on import, so it's worth checking your own customs rules first.
