Gandusha — oil pulling — is one of the oldest oral hygiene practices there is: hold oil in the mouth, swish it slowly for ten minutes, spit it out, rinse. Ayurveda prescribes it as a daily dinacharya practice, before brushing, for gums, breath and the teeth themselves.

Plain coconut oil works, but this is the advanced blend: a cold-pressed base carrying clove, peppermint and tea tree essential oils, plus traditional oral-care botanicals. Clove for the numbing, antibacterial bite the tradition relies on; peppermint so it is actually pleasant to hold in the mouth for ten minutes; tea tree for the gums.

Blended and bottled in the UK in 100ml amber glass. One bottle is roughly a month of daily practice.

Does what it says

The smell is strong, which is how I know it has not been deodorised. It has replaced two other products in my bathroom cabinet. Fine product, though it is not really what I had assumed I was buying — my mistake rather than theirs.

    Exactly as described

I have used the supermarket version for years and there is no comparison. I use it on my face at night and on the ends of my hair in the morning. Exactly as described on the listing.

Recommended by a friend — glad I tried it

The smell is strong, which is how I know it has not been deodorised. A teaspoon massaged into the scalp before washing has made a real difference. Pleased I found this shop.

    Great find

I have used the supermarket version for years and there is no comparison. I take a teaspoon each morning with a little honey. A genuinely good product at a fair price.

    Better than expected

Absorbs beautifully without leaving my skin greasy. The 250ml is the one to buy — the 100ml went in six weeks. Exactly as described on the listing.

Questions & answers3

  • Is this cold pressed?

    Sofia L. · 4 weeks ago

    • Yes, and unrefined — which is why the colour and smell vary a little between batches. That variation is the oil doing what it should, not a fault.

  • Will it clog pores if I use it on my face?

    Ellie B. · last month

    • That varies from person to person. Try it on a small area for a few days before using it all over, and give any new oil a couple of weeks before deciding.

  • Can I take this alongside my prescription medication?

    Sofia L. · 2 months ago

    • That isn't something we can answer safely for an individual — herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, and show them the ingredient list from this page.
