The jamun tree is best known for its purple summer fruit, but the bark is the part the classical texts prescribe. It is markedly astringent — kashaya rasa — and has been used for generations in two ways: as a decoction and mouthwash for gums and a sore throat, and as part of the traditional approach to blood-sugar balance, alongside the seed powder.

Astringency in Ayurveda means tightening and drying, so jamun bark is the herb for loose, weak, over-wet tissue: bleeding gums, a lax gut, damp skin. It is a hot-climate staple across India for exactly that reason.

We take bark from mature trees only, on rotation, cut and sift it, and pack it without fumigation. Best used as a decoction.

Good value for the quality

I grind it fresh myself, so getting it whole matters to me. I make a decoction twice a week and the strength is consistent every time. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

    Clean and well sorted

You can see the quality as soon as you open the bag. The larger size is much better value and it keeps perfectly. Slightly slower delivery than I expected, but the product itself is excellent.

    Very pleased

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. I have been using it in a winter kadha along with tulsi and ginger. Will definitely buy again.

I grind it fresh myself, so getting it whole matters to me. Grinding a week's worth at a time works well for me. Will definitely buy again.

Questions & answers3

3 of 3 answered

  • Do I need to grind it myself?

    Anita R. · 3 weeks ago

    • For most uses, yes — it's sold whole so it keeps its aroma far longer than a pre-ground powder would. A spice grinder or a pestle and mortar is plenty.

  • Is it cleaned and sorted, or will I need to pick through it?

    Rachel M. · last month

    • It's sorted and cleaned before packing, so you shouldn't be picking out stalks or grit. If a pack ever arrives otherwise, tell us and we'll replace it.

  • Is the packaging recyclable?

    Meera P. · 2 months ago

    • The outer carton is card and goes in with your paper recycling. The inner pouch is kept airtight to protect the contents, so check your local authority's guidance for that part.
