Chew a sliver of akarkara and you will not forget it: within seconds the tongue tingles and the mouth waters. That distinctive pungency, from a compound called pellitorine, is exactly why both Ayurveda and Unani reach for this root for the mouth, the gums and the nerves.

Traditionally it is the herb for toothache and weak gums — the reason it still appears in Unani tooth powders — and a recognised nervine and vajikarana tonic taken in small quantities. Because it is a strong, warming, saliva-stimulating root, the dose is measured in a pinch, not a spoon.

We supply it as whole, sun-dried, hand-graded root so you can see what you are buying. Powder it yourself as needed; ground akarkara loses its bite within weeks.

Will reorder

I grind it fresh myself, so getting it whole matters to me. I have been using it in a winter kadha along with tulsi and ginger. No hesitation in recommending it.

    Great find

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. The larger size is much better value and it keeps perfectly. Docking a star only because I would like clearer batch dates on the pack.

    Better than the local shop

Whole pieces rather than broken bits, which is exactly what I wanted. I have been using it in a winter kadha along with tulsi and ginger. Will definitely buy again.

    Good value for the quality

Whole pieces rather than broken bits, which is exactly what I wanted. Grinding a week's worth at a time works well for me. No hesitation in recommending it.

Questions & answers3

3 of 3 answered

  • Do I need to grind it myself?

    Ellie B. · 3 weeks ago

    • For most uses, yes — it's sold whole so it keeps its aroma far longer than a pre-ground powder would. A spice grinder or a pestle and mortar is plenty.

  • Is it cleaned and sorted, or will I need to pick through it?

    Rachel M. · 2 months ago

    • It's sorted and cleaned before packing, so you shouldn't be picking out stalks or grit. If a pack ever arrives otherwise, tell us and we'll replace it.

  • Where is it sourced from, and is it tested?

    Ellie B. · 2 months ago

    • Sourcing is listed under Origin at the top of this page. Every batch is checked on arrival for identity and purity before it's packed, and we keep the batch records for each lot we sell.
