Paneer dodi is the dried fruit of Withania coagulans, a close relative of ashwagandha, and it gets its various names from a genuinely useful property: it curdles milk, so it has been used as a vegetarian rennet for making cheese for centuries.

In Indian home practice it is far better known for something else. Six to ten of the papery little fruits are soaked in a glass of water overnight and the water is drunk on an empty stomach in the morning — one of the most widely used traditional routines for blood-sugar balance in North India. The soak water is faintly bitter and slightly milky.

We supply the whole calyx-wrapped fruit, sun-dried and hand-cleaned. It should look papery and pale, not brown and crumbling.

Will reorder

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. Storing it whole means it still smells strong three months in. No hesitation in recommending it.

    Reliable every time

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. The larger size is much better value and it keeps perfectly. Marking it four rather than five only because the smell takes some getting used to.

    Very good grade

Well sorted, properly dried and no musty smell whatsoever. I have been using it in a winter kadha along with tulsi and ginger. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

    Just what I needed

Whole pieces rather than broken bits, which is exactly what I wanted. I make a decoction twice a week and the strength is consistent every time. Pleased I found this shop.

Questions & answers4

4 of 4 answered

  • Do I need to grind it myself?

    Ellie B. · 4 weeks ago

    • For most uses, yes — it's sold whole so it keeps its aroma far longer than a pre-ground powder would. A spice grinder or a pestle and mortar is plenty.

  • Is it cleaned and sorted, or will I need to pick through it?

    James H. · 2 months ago

    • It's sorted and cleaned before packing, so you shouldn't be picking out stalks or grit. If a pack ever arrives otherwise, tell us and we'll replace it.

  • Is this suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

    Hassan A. · 2 months ago

    • Yes — it's a single plant ingredient with nothing of animal origin used in the product or the processing. The full ingredient list is on the Ingredients tab above.

  • Where is it sourced from, and is it tested?

    Rachel M. · 3 months ago

    • Sourcing is listed under Origin at the top of this page. Every batch is checked on arrival for identity and purity before it's packed, and we keep the batch records for each lot we sell.
