Ajwain ke phool — literally "the flower of ajwain" — is not a flower at all. It is thymol, the volatile compound that gives carom seed its ferocious aroma, sublimed out of the seed and allowed to crystallise into white needles. It is ajwain concentrated perhaps fifty times over, and a single crystal will scent an entire room.

The traditional use is respiratory: a couple of crystals in hot water for a steam inhalation, or a crystal tied in muslin and tucked near a sleeping child's pillow — never on the skin — to keep the nose clear. It is also the traditional Indian answer to a stuffy chest in monsoon weather, and thymol remains a recognised antiseptic in mouthwashes and dental preparations worldwide.

Hand-packed in a 50g glass jar. This is a potent isolate: use it in crystals, not spoonfuls.

Great to find a proper source

The traditional grade, which is surprisingly hard to source in the UK. The jar seals properly, which is essential for this. Five stars from me.

Recommended by a friend — glad I tried it

Well packed and sealed properly, which matters with this. Works exactly as the traditional preparation is supposed to. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

A staple in our house now

Well packed and sealed properly, which matters with this. I follow the instructions carefully and it has been completely straightforward. Docking a star only because I would like clearer batch dates on the pack.

    Exactly the traditional grade

The traditional grade, which is surprisingly hard to source in the UK. I follow the instructions carefully and it has been completely straightforward. Marking it four rather than five only because the smell takes some getting used to.

  • How do I know I'm getting the genuine article?

    Anita R. · 4 weeks ago

    • Every lot is identity-checked against a reference sample before packing, and we keep the batch records. If anything about a pack looks off to you, send us a photo and we'll look into that lot.

  • How much should I use at a time?

    Hassan A. · 2 months ago

    • Start at the low end of the range on the Dosage tab above and give it time. More isn't better with this one.

      HerbasenseOfficial answer· 2 months ago

  • Where is it sourced from, and is it tested?

    Dev K. · 2 months ago

    • Sourcing is listed under Origin at the top of this page. Every batch is checked on arrival for identity and purity before it's packed, and we keep the batch records for each lot we sell.

  • Can I take this alongside my prescription medication?

    Tom W. · 3 months ago

    • That isn't something we can answer safely for an individual — herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, and show them the ingredient list from this page.
