There are two entirely different things sold as camphor, and confusing them is dangerous. The white tablets sold for burning are synthetic camphor, made from turpentine, and they are toxic if eaten. This is the other kind: edible camphor, pacha karpooram, natural Bhimseni kapur crystallised from the camphor laurel and graded food-safe.

In South Indian kitchens and temple kitchens a pinch goes into payasam, kheer, laddus and panakam — a distinctive cooling, mentholated sweetness that nothing else replicates. It is equally the camphor used in puja and aarti, where a clean, sootless flame matters.

A pinch is a genuine pinch: the smallest crumb flavours a whole pan of kheer, and more than that ruins it. Supplied as translucent crystals rather than pressed tablets, which is how you can tell it is the natural grade.

Just as my grandmother used

Exactly what I remember from home. The jar seals properly, which is essential for this. The only thing I would change is the packaging — a resealable zip would help.

Great to find a proper source

Exactly what I remember from home. Have already recommended it to two people in my family. Docking a star only because I would like clearer batch dates on the pack.

    Exactly the traditional grade

The traditional grade, which is surprisingly hard to source in the UK. Have already recommended it to two people in my family. A genuinely good product at a fair price.

  • How do I know I'm getting the genuine article?

    Rachel M. · 3 weeks ago

    • Every lot is identity-checked against a reference sample before packing, and we keep the batch records. If anything about a pack looks off to you, send us a photo and we'll look into that lot.

  • How much should I use at a time?

    Meera P. · last month

    • Start at the low end of the range on the Dosage tab above and give it time. More isn't better with this one.

  • Can I take this alongside my prescription medication?

    Meera P. · 2 months ago

    • That isn't something we can answer safely for an individual — herbs can interact with prescription medicines. Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, and show them the ingredient list from this page.

  • Is the packaging recyclable?

    Sofia L. · 3 months ago

    • The outer carton is card and goes in with your paper recycling. The inner pouch is kept airtight to protect the contents, so check your local authority's guidance for that part.
